Male Andropause and Skin Changes

Andropause, often referred to as "male menopause," is a gradual decline in testosterone and other key hormones that typically occurs in men starting in their 40s or 50s. Unlike menopause in women, which happens over a shorter period, andropause is a slow, progressive process. Testosterone, the primary male sex hormone, begins to decrease by about 1% per year after the age of 30. This decline can lead to noticeable changes, including reduced muscle mass, fatigue, mood swings, lower libido, and an overall decrease in vitality. Other hormones, such as DHEA and growth hormone, also decline, affecting energy levels, metabolism, and skin health.

One of the most visible effects of andropause is on the skin. As testosterone and other hormone levels drop, the skin becomes thinner, drier, and more prone to wrinkles. Collagen production slows down, leading to sagging and loss of firmness. Reduced oil production can cause the skin to become dehydrated, making fine lines and creases more apparent. Additionally, slower cell turnover can result in a dull, uneven complexion, and a decrease in blood circulation may contribute to a lack of radiance. Some men may also notice increased sensitivity, redness, or delayed wound healing due to the weakened skin barrier.

To combat these changes, a well-rounded skincare routine is essential. Hydration is key, so incorporating a rich, non-greasy moisturiser with ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides can help maintain moisture levels. Retinol or Peptides can stimulate collagen production and improve skin texture, while antioxidants like Vitamin C and Niacinamide can protect against environmental damage and enhance skin tone. Since andropause can also make skin more sensitive, using gentle, fragrance-free cleansers and avoiding harsh exfoliants is recommended. Sunscreen remains a crucial step in preventing premature aging, as UV exposure accelerates collagen loss. By adopting a targeted skincare regimen, men experiencing andropause can maintain healthier, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin.
